Wasted Potential defeats We Love Balls, 6-1 to win Summer 2019 Oakland Title
August 17, 2019 - OAKLAND - Fourth seeded Wasted Potential defeated third seeded We Love Balls at Mosswood Park to win the Golden State Kickball, Summer 2019 - Oakland title on Saturday, 6-1. The single elimination tournament brought together thrills all day on the field and at the BBQ.
In the Play In Round, (6) Pitch Please squeaked by (11) 2 Legit 2 Kick, 1-0 in a defensive game. (5) Just Rubber Balls edged out (12) Gluck Gluck 9000's, 6-1. (8) Underdogs defeated (9) Lick My Cleat in a slugfest, 11-5 and (7) Tooters ousted (10) Baseless Claims, 12-4.
The saying "Any Given Saturday" moniker held true as there were some major upsets on the day in the Quarterfinals. While (3) We Love Balls defeated (6) Pitch Please, 8-1 and (4) Wasted Potential edged out (5) Just Rubber Balls late, 7-6, the top two seeds were ousted. (2) Angels in the Outfield were ousted by (7) Tooters late, 4-3 and in the most thrilling game of the day (8) Underdogs upset (1) Better from Behind, 5-4 in 9 innings.
The Semifinals were also a doozy as (3) We Love Balls came back on (7) Tooters late to win 6-3, while (4) Wasted Potential took an early 3-0 lead and cruised to victory against (8) Underdogs, 4-1.
With the championship game set up (4) Wasted Potential got things started out of the gate early with some small ball bringing home a run in the first. We Love Balls offense struggled with runners on base all game and had trouble mustering up some offense. Wasted added a single run in the 3rd and then tacked on 4 more in the fourth highlighted by a two run double to right field. We Love Balls would not go down without a fight as they picked up a run in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to 6-1. Down to their last opportunity in the bottom half of the sixth, We Love Balls got runners to 1st and 3rd with two outs, but a groundout ended their title hopes and Wasted Potential sealed the Summer 2019 Title.
